The Seaside city council endorses off-premises liquor beer and wine sales for a new convenience store to be opened by Seth Morrisey of Seaside Stop and Go at 1625 N. Roosevelt. The council’s endorsement includes requirements that Morrisey follows through with camera surveillance inside and outside of the store to prevent sales to minors. And a proposed beer cave or vault inside the store also offers tight security to prevent illegal sales.
The council votes 6-1 to endorse the liquor license, with Mayor Don Larson dissenting. Larson says it’s too close to the school. Early in the meting, councilor Stubby Lyons agrees with Larson asks to delay consideration of the issue. Lyons says this will also be the first time that the council considers endorsing a liquor license within 500-feet of a school. He’s also concerned about the public safety issue of foot traffic across the busy highway. The Human Bean coffee shop also operates nearby.
High school vice principal Lee Loving tells the council that Seaside High School will operate a closed campus for freshmen during the next school year; but Loving says he’s not speaking for the district regarding endorsement of the liquor license endorsement. Mayor Larsen says the public safety issue of kids crossing the highway is something the school district will have to address on its own. Councilor Lyons participates in the council’s vote after being assured by Morrisey that Morrisey will follow the council’s direction regarding the two security measures.
As Mayor Larson notes, the OLCC will have the final say regarding the liquor license for the new Stop And Go convenience store.
