News That Didn't Make The News

Here are some stories that didn't make the news but make for good small talk around the water cooler....

  NAKED LUNCH
GREENVILLE, Maine (AP) - No more naked lunches at the Black Frog
Restaurant. The Maine lake-side eatery is dropping the promotion of
giving skinny dipping customers a free Skinny Dip sandwich. That's
thinly sliced prime rib on a baguette. Police report getting
several nudity complaints and three people face indecent conduct
charges. Owner Leigh Turner decided to can the bare butts after the
town board voted to deny his liquor license renewal. He says
dropping the free Skinny Dip for skinny dippers is a no-brainer.

 FIRST CARVEL CLOSING
HARTSDALE, N.Y. (AP) - A bit of ice cream history is melting.
The original Carvel ice cream store just north of New York City
served its last cone last night. Current owner Abdol Faghihi
(ab-DOOL' fah-HEE'-hee) says a new restaurant will replace the old
Carvel as part of a redevelopment project in Hartsdale. Tom Carvel
opened his ice cream shop there more than 70 years ago. His ice
cream truck got a flat tire on Central Avenue in 1934. Two years
later he opened an ice cream stand on the spot. Today, the Carvel
brand is sold in more than 500 Carvel stores and 8,500 supermarkets
nationwide.

 LIBRARY LENDING
ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) - The credit crisis isn't putting a dent in
one type of lending -- from the public library. Officials in
Ontario, California, report library visits were up by seven percent
in the fiscal year that ended July 30th. The number of books,
movies and tapes loaned out rose eight percent. Library officials
say more people are likely to borrow books rather than buy them has
times get even tougher.

 STUNTMAN COP
ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) - Matthew Nelson is one tough cop -- and
one tough stuntman. But he was a stuntman before he became a police
officer. He's the newest officer on the force in Westport,
Washington. As a stuntman, he's been set on fire and leaped from a
50-foot waterfall. But Nelson says what's really scary is having to
learn how to type for his police reports. He tells the Daily World
newspaper he's proud of being a cop, but is open to doing more
stunts in the future.

 LEAPIN' LABRADOR
OAKRIDGE, Ore. (AP) - Leapin' Labradors! Heidi the yellow Lab is
headed to the DockDogs National Championships in Richfield,
Wisconsin, this coming weekend. Her owner is Hannah Gordon, a
14-year-old freshman at Oregon's Oakridge High. She says Heidi's
best leap is 25 feet, 2 inches. Hannah has no idea why Heidi is
such a good jumper but started when she was a pup. Hannah says
Heidi has won about a dozen DockDogs competitions. Hannah adds
Heidi just likes leaping.

 FEAR NOT CLASS
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - There's plenty to fear these days -- from
the financial meltdown to restless leg syndrome. But psychologist
Herb Smith is teaching his students to fear not. He has a course on
fear in the continuing education program at Rhodes College, in
Memphis, Tennessee. He tells the Commercial Appeal newspaper that
fear is a natural part of living. But he adds if you're fearful all
of the time, your health is going to suffer. Smith tells his
students to slow down, take some deep breaths and think about now
-- instead of worrying about the future.
