Garth Stein will read from his new book The Art of Racing in the Rain, currently #20 on the NY Times Bestseller list, at 7pm, Saturday, October 11 at the Manzanita Writers Series at the Hoffman Center Annex in Manzanita.
Now published in 23 languages, The Art of Racing in the Rain was the #1 BookSense selection for June, 2008, the Starbucks spring/summer 2008 book selection, and has been on the IndieBound™ bestseller list since its publication. It’s a heart-wrenching, wise and deeply funny book written from the viewpoint of Enzo, a dog. (And mind you, you don’t have to be a car-racing fan…or even a dog owner…to love this book! And yes, you may well cry.)
Stein is the author of Raven Stole the Moon, How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets and the play Brother Jones. He teaches fiction to writers from second grade to adult. He makes his home in Seattle with his wife, three sons, and his dog, Comet.
In conjunction with this reading and to celebrate local dogs, Four Paws on the Beach in Manzanita is running a contest for the best philosophy of life -- from the viewpoint of your dog. If your dog could talk, what would he or she say? Stop in at Four Paws to share your dog’s voice (no purchase necessary). A group of literary dog aficionados will select the top five entries to be read at the October 11 event. Audience applause will select the top winner (of a gift basket of dog toys and treats from Four Paws.)
Enzo’s philosophies run to very human life lessons: "That which is around me does not affect my mood; my mood affects that which is around me." And: "That which you manifest is before you."
Some local dog philosophies: “Stressed? Turn in circles, lie down and sleep.” “If it hits the floor, it’s mine!” “There is no such thing as being too old or too tired to chase a seagull.”
Following Stein’s reading on Oct. 11, the popular Open Mic session will provide opportunities for the audience to hear nine local writers read from their original work.
Writers interested in reading should check out the Open Mic guidelines at hoffmancentermanzanita.org/manzanitawriters and come prepared to read your original piece of work in five minutes or less.
