Council approves street vacation

The Astoria city council Monday approves the street vacation sought by property owner Jim Neikes in the area of Birch, Cedar and 59th streets near the old Tongue Point highway.  Neikes has sought the vacation to encourage neighboring property owner Marvin Calvert to remove junk cars from Neikes’ property.   Calvert had argued that the vacation would prevent access to his own property.  But, city manager Paul Benoit says access is still available to Calvert without use of Neikes’ property.  Second reading and adoption of the applicable ordinance at the next regular meeting.
