The Coast Guard assisted in the search for a five-year-old boy who fell from a dike into the Columbia River Saturday while fishing with his father.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., the Columbia County 911 Center contacted Coast Guard Sector Portland to request assistance after the boy fell into the water at Dibblee Beach near Rainer, Ore.
Within minutes, an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria and a 25-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Portland, joined local agencies in the search.
At about 5:00 p.m., divers from the Cowlitz County, Ore., Sheriff's Office located the boy, who was later declared dead.
